早在15、16世紀(jì),英國的城堡就有茅廁(privy)。它是指使用較為方便的戶外廁所(outhouse),里面有木制或石制蹲位,下面有坑。在16世紀(jì)90年代,英國的Sir
John
Harrington發(fā)明了第一個(gè)廁所,他稱之為water
closet。至今他的名字還是廁所的委婉語:the
john。由此又有了go
to
the
john這一"上廁所"的俗語。
