六尺巷的故事

清康熙年間，禮部尚書張英老家桐城的老宅與吳家為鄰，兩家之間有個空地做通道。
后來鄰居吳家建房，要占用空地，張家不同意，雙方將官司打倒縣衙門。
張家人寫信給張英，求其出面干涉。張英回信寫了四句話：

千里來書只為墻，
讓他三尺又何妨？
萬里長城今猶在，
不見當年秦始皇。

家人閱信后，主動讓出三尺空地。吳家深受感動，也讓出三尺房基地，這樣就形成了一個六尺的巷子。兩家禮讓之舉傳為美談。
